Healing
Healing is the procedure by which the cells in the body restore and repair to decrease the size of a damaged or necrotic area. Healing incorporates both the elimination of necrotic tissue (demolition), and the replacement of new tissue.
The replacement can take place in 2 types:
a) By regeneration: the necrotic cells are substituted by the same tissue as was originally there.
b) By repair: injured tissue is substituted with scar tissue.
Most organs will nurse back to health using a mixture of both mechanisms. Healing by regeneration
In order for a wound to be healed by regeneration, the cell type that was destroyed must be able to reproduce. Most cells have this capability, although it is supposed that cardiac muscle cells and neurons are two important exceptions. Healing by repair
Healing must took place by repair in the case of damage to cells that are not capable to regenerate (e.g. neurons or cardiac muscle). Also, injure to the collagen network, or its total collapse cause healing to take place by repair.
