Rheumatology

Rheumatology, a subspecialty of pediatrics and internal medicine is devoted to the analysis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. The term derives from the Greek rheuma, meaning “that which flows as a river or stream” and the suffix -ology, meaning “the study of”. Rheumatologists primarily deal with problems connecting the joints and the allied conditions of connective tissue.

Rheumatology is a fast growing medical field; new scientific discoveries concerning to this specialty are largely related to better understanding of immunology of these problems. Pathogenesis of main rheumatologic disorders is now described as auto immune disorders. Immunology explains pathogenesis and the characteristics of rheumatologic disorders, and most of the new remedy modalities are based on immunology, better understanding of genetic basis of rheumatologic problems makes rheumatology a specialty rapidly developing as a medical specialty based on new scientific discoveries.
