What is Judaism?Judaism was born about 4000 years ago. Judaism is a one of the oldest monotheistic religion known to people, which means that Jewish people pray to only one god. There weren't too many religions like this when it originated which made Judaism very unique at the time. Most of the religions of that period believed in more than one God. But many famous people have been Jewish such as Moses, Jesus, Mahler, Marx, Freud, and Einstein. History of JudaismJewish people’s life hasn’t been easy in that time. The Jewish people have lived from the slavery in Egypt to the Holocaust in Europe, their life filled with situation. The first Jewish person Abraham began Judaism. Jewish belief that he made an (Bible) agreement between God and his people in which God makes certain promises and requires certain behaviour from them in return that he would be the father of a great nation. That nation became the Jewish people. Abraham and his generations were called the “patriarchs” means a man who is older and higher in rank than you. His son Isaac and his grandson Jacob. In the early history Jacob’s favorite son Joseph was also an important part. Because of Jacob’s sons and their activity that transgresses moral or civil law that Joseph ended up in Egypt, eventually leading many Jewish people into the land of Egypt. Moses was one of the most famous Jewish authoritative people who divine the future. He led the Jewish people out of slavery, led them to Mount Sinai and received the Ten Commandments (The biblical commandments of Moses); even today still follow a set of rules by that people’s. After Moses, different leaders had called judges by the Jewish people, and after then kings such as David and Solomon to guiding or motivating them in the land called Israel. Jewish people lived in the land of Israel until 586BCE when they were expel from a country by the Babylonians. It wasn't until 1948, about 2000 years later, that Jewish people were able to return to that land. Customs and TraditionsThey have many customs and traditions. In the middle of them are circumcision (surgical removal of the foreskin of males), bar or bat mitzvah, special rites and prayers to be said during a wedding and during death and deprivation. Circumcision is done as a sign of commitment of Jewish people because the Commandment given to Abraham by God. "A bar or bat mitzvah is an important social event". (Judaism) an initiation ceremony marking the 13th birthday of a Jewish boy, 12th birthday of a Jewish girl and signifying the beginning of religious responsibility. That means when a child reaches the age of maturity and is ready to become an adult their community. During a Jewish wedding, the bride and bridegroom get married wear a special cloth or special canopy called a “chuppah”. Another tradition the breaking of a small glass at the end of the ceremony that is followed by Jewish people on any Jewish wedding. This is the symbol of happy event, and the people should still remember the affliction that was faced before the Jewish people got to that place in time. They wearing kippah on the head (when they go to the place of worship for a Jewish congregation), and wear the tallith (a shawl with a ritually knotted fringe at each corner; worn by Jews at Morning Prayer). HolidaysThere are many Jewish holidays. But all of the holidays begin at sunset the day before the actual holiday. Tu B’shvat (is a minor Jewish holiday celebrating the New Year of the Trees). Purim (holy day commemorating their deliverance from massacre by Haman). Passover (is a traditionally 8 days from Nissan 15) celebrating the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Yom Hashoah is also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day. Yom Ha’atzmaut, is Israel's Independence Day. Shavuot (Jewish holy day celebrated on the sixth of Sivan to celebrate Moses receiving the Ten Commandments). Tisha B’av, remembering the destruction of the temples in Jerusalem. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah which are called the High Holidays. They are part of the Jewish New Year. Passover is one of the most important religious festivals in the Jewish calendar. Jews celebrate the Feast of Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) to commemorate the liberation of the Children of Israel who were led out of Egypt by Moses. ConclusionJewish people have face and withstand with courage many hardships in their history but they have Continue to live through hardship or adversity and made lives in places in Israel and other countries. Jewish people's take parts in many areas such as the literature, entertainment, arts, education and science also in medicine, because they hardly beliefs in the importance of education. Even though they have always had to face struggle from other people and other countries or governments, and always managed to unite them and persevere, scorn the fact that even now there are so many problems going on in the Middle East. They have developed a strong sense of character that has kept them alive for thousands of years. |
