Gemology is an art and science of recognizing and evaluating gemstones. It is considered a geoscience's and a branch of mineralogy. Some jewelers are academically trained gemologists and are qualified to evaluate and identify gems.

With further post-graduate training and experience they can qualify as appraisers commonly known as valuers. There are various professional institutions and associations of gemologists and certification programs all over the globe.

Some gemologists specialize in number of gemstones, such as emeralds or diamonds. The laboratory gemologists are adept in identification of origin.

To become a good gemologist you need to get some proper gemological education and not just a course or two. To become a properly trained gemologist you need to clear the conditions to get a diploma in gemology. Such as the GIA Graduate Gemologist, the Fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain, or other skilled diplomas from accredited gemological schools in Australia, Bangkok, Canada, India, Thailand etc.
